Speaker: Lt. Commander Rob Watt
On Thursday January 27, the Canadian Hero Fund student chapter at the University of British Columbia will present Canadian Forces Lt Commander Rob Watt, IED (Improvised Explosive Device) expert and head of training for ISAF in Afghanistan. His presentation will focus on the changing nature of the conflict in Afghanistan with regards to the use of unconventional weapons in today’s security environments.
Lt Commander Watt will be introduced by the Director of the Security and Defence Program of the Centre of International Relations at the University of British Columbia – Dr. Brian Job

The UBC Chapter of the Canadian Hero Fund has been active since the Fall of 2010. It is the second student chapter of the Canadian Hero Fund to be established, and the first on the West Coast.

50% of Canadian Forces deaths in Afghanistan were as a result of IED’s.

“Watt has served on submarines, frigates and minesweepers of the US Navy, Canadian Navy, and the Royal Navy. He has been the Commanding Officer of the Pacific Fleet Diving Unit and his most recent deployment in early 2010 was as the Chief of Counter-Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Training for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Command in Afghanistan, running four mobile training teams that operated throughout the country working with both Afghan and NATO forces.”
