Hockey and Heroes raised $10,000 for the Canadian Hero Fund!

Hockey Canada Fundraiser

On June 28th, 2010, Hockey Canada joined forces with Canada’s military in Edmonton to pay tribute to heroes in two types of uniforms.  The Canadian men’s and women’s Olympic hockey teams assembled in the city of champions to celebrate their gold medal victories and to recognize the service of our armed forces.

The rally and concert coincided with Hockey Canada’s annual gala and charity golf tournament which raises money for minor hockey programs.  In the spirit of support for Canadian Forces, a total of $10,000 was also directed to the Canadian Hero Fund scholarship program for the children of fallen soldiers.

“Just to be on the same stage as our Olympic athletes is incredible,” said Major John Shorten, one of the organizers on the military side.  While the military were excited to participate, many hockey players were honoured to share the stage with them.  Jayna Hefford, a forward on the women’s gold medal-winning team, said she is proud to pay tribute to members of Canada’s military. “We’re hockey players and we compete for our country.  But for what they do for Canada, it’s not even close,” said Hefford.

To say the least, the event reminded all in attendance of what it really means to be a hero.
