Fury Fight for the Troops
On February 20, 2010, the Eastern Ontario Fight League and CanFight Promotions staged “Fury Fight for the Troops” at the Trentwinds International Centre in Peterborough, Ontario. The event featured amateur kickboxing bouts between local fighters and others from as far as Timmins, in an effort that raised over $1000 for the Canadian Hero Fund.
The idea to host an event in support of the troops and their families came from 14 year-old competitor Devin Bulger. Bulger is the nephew of Cpl. Nicholas Bulger who was killed in action in July of 2009.
Organizers Scott Birkhof, the owner of Extreme Kickboxing, and Matt Blundell, a promoter for CanFight, brought the Canadian Hero Fund volunteers into the ring during intermission to present their donation. Funds were also raised through t-shirt sales and cash donations.
The event also benefitted the Yellow Ribbon Campaign, which sends care packages to Canadian Troops overseas. Cpl. Bulger’s mother, Kathy, represented the charity on the night of the event.
The Canadian Hero Fund is most grateful to Scott Birkhof and Matt Blundell for their work in organizing the event.
